Capacity Measurements

Capacity is the amount of container can hold. we measure liquids such as milk, petrol or kerosene with the help of containers whose capacity is known. The standards units of capacity are litre and millilitres

100 millilitres (mℓ) = 1 litre (ℓ)

A millilitre is a very small unit of capacity.

The capacity of tespoon is about 5 mℓ

A litre is a bigger unit of capacity. The capacity of your water bottle is about 1 litre (ℓ)

The capacities of some common containers are

Tablespoon - About 15 mℓ

Tea Cup - About 150 mℓ

water tank - About 500 litre(ℓ)

Conversion of Capacity

Example1: Convert 8 litres into millilitres.

1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ

8 ℓ = 8 x 1000 mℓ = 8000 mℓ

Example 2: This toilet flush tank has a capacity of 5 l 550 ml. How many millilitres of water flows down the pot when you flush the toilet?

1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ

5 ℓ = 5 x 1000 mℓ = 5000 mℓ

5 ℓ 550 mℓ = 5000 mℓ + 550 mℓ = 5550 mℓ

Addition and Subtraction of Capacity

Example1: Three friends collected cooking oil to help flood vicitims. Friend1 gave 1 l 900 ml, friend2 gave 10 l 50 ml and friend3 gave 15l 775 ml. How much oil did they collect in all ?

= 1 l 900 mℓ + 10 ℓ 50 mℓ + 15l 775 mℓ

= 27 litre(ℓ) 725 ml

Example2: Solve 32 litre 380 mℓ - 18 litre 400 mℓ ?

= 32 litre 380 mℓ - 18 litre 400 mℓ

= 13 litre 980 mℓ
